Alison Nicholas MBE presents Caroline with the Player of the Year Award

Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall has collected another accolade after her outstanding first year as a professional ended with her being named the Ladies European Tour’s Player of the Year for 2011.

This award was launched in 1995 and is voted on by the Ladies European Tour membership. Hedwall is the first player in LET history to win both this award and be named the Rolex Rookie of the Year in the same season.

“This means a lot to me,” Hedwall told guests at an awards ceremony following the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.

“To be honest, I hardly can believe this year. I mean it's just been so good, and if you told me I would have won four times on the LET, I probably wouldn't believe you, so it's just been unbelievable. I probably can't relate to it yet because I need some time off to just think back on this year. But it's been great, for sure.

“The best highlight is the Solheim Cup. That was just the best week, one of the best weeks of my life. So it was such a good week and so much fun, and to win the Solheim Cup my rookie year, too, that's just unbelievable. So overall it's been a great season.”

With four victories and a starring role on Europe’s winning Solheim Cup team during her debut season, Hedwall was anything but an ordinary rookie on the Ladies European Tour.

Having won Qualifying School by nine shots at La Manga Club she claimed her first LET title at the Allianz Ladies Slovak Open on the mountainous Gray Bear Golf Resort in Brezno in May.

Next, she collected her second LET title at the Finnair Masters in Helsinki. That one was special, because it felt almost like playing at home in Sweden.

Her third Ladies European Tour victory came at the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open presented by Raiffeisen, in Austria.

She capped a great season by claiming her fourth official LET win at the Hero Women’s Indian Open at DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon near New Delhi in December.

She then collected the Players’ Player of the Year Award, as voted for by her fellow competitors, having ended the year ranked third on the LET’s official Henderson Money List, behind Ai Miyazato and Melissa Reid, with season’s earnings of 278,529 from 20 tournaments played.

Hedwall is taking a break before launching herself into action in Australia in February next season and will be an exciting player to watch in 2012.
