Former US Open champion and Solheim Cup captain Alison Nicholas returned to the Sheffield golf club where she launched her career to mark a £75,000 clubhouse refurbishment.

Nursing a broken ankle caused by a fall while exercising, Alison was guest of honour at Hallamshire Golf Club, Sandygate, where she is a life member. The club has refurbished its lounge and veranda, as well as installing a spike bar and extending its patio overlooking the 18th green.

The club has recently been voted in the top 12 Yorkshire courses and recommended as a “Must Play Course” by National Club Golfer. Work is under way constructing new tees to extend the length of the course to present an even tougher challenge the best players. A ground source heat pump and solar panels are being installed to reduce the clubhouse’s carbon footprint and energy bills.

Alison joined Hallamshire in 1980 as a 17 year old and was soon selected to play for the Yorkshire County Team culminating in victory in the Yorkshire County Championship in 1984. It followed her success as British Stroke Play Champion in 1983.

She turned pro in 1984 joining the Ladies’ European Tour the same year, going on to become one of the world’s greatest players.

The highlight of her playing career came in 1997 when she was crowned US Open Champion. Following this success Alison was awarded the MBE for services to women’s golf. She was Captain of the European Ladies Solheim Cup Team in 2010 and 2011.

She said: “I have fond memories of Halllamshire and I’m proud to be an honorary member. The refurbishment has brought new life to the facilities which I am sure will be appreciated by members and visitors alike.”
