Nicholas was the special guest at a Furness Golf Club dinner, as part of their 140th anniversary celebrations, and she also led some coaching drills at the Walney links.

Nicholas embarked on a tour of county clubs last week, with visits to Kendal and Silecroft, before she arrived at Furness.

She brought with her the coveted Solheim Cup, which she lifted last year as captain of the European team, who beat USA 15-13 at Killeen Castle in Ireland.

And the fact she travelled up from the Birmingham area while nursing a broken ankle and a bad back shows her commitment to the game.

“It was very good, everybody enjoyed it,” said Furness Golf Club president Alyson Wood.

“She was very entertaining at the dinner and then the coaching was very good.

“It was very cold in the morning when we did the putting, but then in the afternoon we did bunkers and pitching, and it came out quite nice.”

Nicholas was unable to put any weight on her right leg and was suffering from a bad back, and her efforts were much appreciated by those at Furness.

“When she turned up at my house she didn’t seem like the same person who had been running around at Killeen Castle last year,” said Wood.

“She’s very down to earth, and everyone enjoyed it. Hopefully she’s inspired a lot of people.”

Wood is now preparing for the Evening Mail Furness Open ladies’ competition, a 4-ball betterball, which takes place tomorrow.

The men compete for the Festival of Britain Trophy on Saturday, with the juniors also in Evening Mail Open action on that day. For more information contact the club on 01229 471232.
