Use the Quiet Eye when putting to improve performance
The quiet eye is a measurement when the eyes stop moving and become laser focused on a particular target. Dr Joan Vickers has undertaken research using the quiet eye in putting and has found that a change in gaze control appears to help a player self-organise the putting stroke without overt coaching. Players that fix their gaze on the back of the ball for two to three seconds and also a specific target perform better. Poor putters do not fixate on a specific target but direct their gaze to a number of locations on and around the hole as well as all around the ball. They have a shorter quiet eye duration because they are unable to keep their gaze quiet as they stroke the ball. Adopt a better routine to access the quiet eye successfully to improve your putting performance.
Routine: Pick a specific target where you want the ball to go and look at this location for two seconds and visualise the ball tracking on that line or see it go in the back of the hole if it is a straight putt. Smoothly shift your gaze without interruption from the target to the back of the ball. Fixate your eye on the back of the ball for two to three seconds and maintain this quiet eye during the backstroke and forward stroke through contact. Only after you have done this can you take a look do not peek!!
